I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO...

December 28, 2016

The repeated refrain offered after a small weight gain. We all know how we got there. We all know what we need to do to get rid of the excess weight. But...?

But what? I know I would just as soon blame anyone (that damn pizza-loving husband!) and anything (that damn small business owner stress!) than take responsibility for my own actions.

First, it was the stress and time constraints associated with opening of the new business that steered me right to the drive thru. Then, it was the emotional eating of excess sugar and fat that accompanied the sudden loss of my father. Halloween candy. Thanksgiving dinner. Christmas cookies. Dammit, already January 1st. Welp! Here go all the resolutions!

Five days of healthy eating may extend to five weeks. But never, never has a "clean eating" streak carried me much further. No, instead they all ended with a slide down the shame spiral of a pizza and candy binge.

And this brings me back to -- I know what I need to do. Truthfully, I think we all do. But the what to do requires making some serious changes to a lifestyle filled with convenient habits. And the what to do involves quite a few modifications. Too many to make all at once.

This is where magic potions can become so alluring. If a rapid weight loss could jump start a new lifestyle, it could surely be sustainable. Only those high-priced "detoxes" and clean eating programs need to eventually withstand the reality of a life. A life that involves food that enters all kinds of mixes -- social gatherings, celebrations, and yes, stress and depression.

This is why food rules have failed me so miserably.

While I did my certification with Precision Nutrition, I hadn't yet coached anyone using their online coaching system. If anything, I felt the sheer volume of research they provided left me in a state of paralysis when inundated with just so much information. More stuff to fail at DOING. So, before Thanksgiving (because I love waiting until the most fattening season!) I started coaching myself using the PN Coaching model.

Since I have begun, I have lost 8 pounds and an inch and a half from my waistline. The most radical part is that I haven't made any major changes to my workouts, haven't restricted a single food item. In fact, I don't feel like I am "doing" much of anything at all. This is the game changer for me.

In January, I am launching the PN Coaching program at Fit Club. The first month is absolutely free for members. This year-long coaching program gives you the time, space, support, and skills to make lean eating a part of your life. In a way that is realistic, incredibly low pressure, and feels completely attainable and, indeed, sustainable.

At the risk of sounding very Hair Club for Men, I'm not just a coach, I'm a client. I can safely say this approach is sound and works in ways that feel great. I can't wait to see what the next 11 months hold.
